SUMMARY:The SBIRT Model & Essential Skills of Interprofessional Practice
DESCRIPTION:Register for a lecture by Dr. Michael Dentato: https://sbirt-model-mdentato.eventbrite.ca \n  \nFriday\, September 22\, 2017\n1:30-3:30 pm\nGeorge Ignatieff Theatre\n15 Devonshire Place \n  \nAn emerging interprofessional practice model for screening individuals for alcohol and substance use is the Screening\, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model which uses skills related to motivational interviewing (MI) and the brief negotiated interview (BNI). Such models and interprofessional practice skills are essential in the field of social work across various settings and while working with diverse and marginalized populations. This lecture will examine the SBIRT model\, along with MI and the BNI\, to underscore their relevance and practical usefulness in the field. The lecture will also discuss a successful example of interprofessional practice led by a school of social work in developing an SBIRT training program within one university\, across three schools (social work\, nursing and medicine)\, along with providing ongoing challenges and opportunities. \nDr. Michael Dentato is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at Loyola University Chicago. His research and scholarship centers around the assessment of health and health disparities among sexual minority populations; preparedness of social work students to provide affirming services for the LGBTQ community and; the impact of macro practice\, interprofessional education\, effective non-profit leadership and service provision for vulnerable communities. \nHe has over twenty years of direct service and consultant experience including clinical\, administrative and policy work throughout his tenure in New York City\, Miami and Chicago. Dr. Dentato is currently a Research Affiliate for the Center for Health\, Identity\, Behavior and Prevention Studies (CHIBPS) at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture\, Education & Human Development; Ambassador at the Institute for Transformative Interprofessional Education (I-TIE) at Loyola University Chicago; and Associate Editor for Behavioral Medicine. \nHe is the former Co-Chair of the Council on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity & Expression (CSOGIE) at the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE); as well as former President of the Board of Directors for Test Positive Aware Network (TPAN). \n  \n  \nAttn: Advanced Standing and Year 2 MSW students \nThis lecture has been disseminated amongst Field Instructors. If you are interested in attending\, talk to your FI as it will take place during practicum hours.

SUMMARY:The 'Men' in Mental Health?
DESCRIPTION:Implications of the Gender Epidemic in Social Work Research and Practice\nFactor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work\n246 Bloor Street W.\, Room 548\nThursday\, Nov. 9th\n5:00-7:00pm \n  \nDaphne C. Watkins\, PhD is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan\, with faculty appointments in the School of Social Work and the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. Her research cultivates a deeper understanding of the influence of gender role socialization on health status over the adult life course for marginalized men. Dr. Watkins’ research focuses on understanding the social determinants of health that explain within group differences among black men; developing evidence-based strategies to improve the mental health conditions of black men; and increasing knowledge about the intersection of age\, culture\, and gender. Dr. Watkins is an experienced mixed methods researcher who uses qualitative and quantitative data to increase knowledge about how intersecting social determinants and gender dynamics place black men at high risk for poor health. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a Doctorate in Health Education from Texas A&M University. She has received federal and foundation support for her research\, and has produced over 50 peer-reviewed publications\, 17 book chapters and volume sections\, one mixed methods book (Oxford University Press\, 2015) and another book currently under contract (SAGE Publications\, 2018).
