SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Canada in a Trump World
DESCRIPTION:Canada in a Trump World: What did January 20th mean for us?\n  \nMonday\, February 13\, 2017\n12:10-1:15pm\nRoom 114 \nIn our increasingly troubled world\, at times it seems more and more difficult to put theory and policy into practice. How do we stay true to our principles when we may have had different lived experiences in areas of conflict and very different narratives to describe our experiences? And why is it more important than ever to create an environment for real dialogue during times of conflict and extremism? \nThese are some of the questions that will be addressed in this session\, which will include an anti-racism approach to building allies in our struggle for equity and understanding. \n  \nDr. Karen Mock is a human rights consultant\, educational psychologist and teacher educator. She is former Executive Director of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF)\, former National Director of the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada\, and Past Chair of the Canadian Multiculturalism Advisory Committee (CMAC) to the Secretary of State.  Considered a pioneer in the field\, she was a founding member of the Anti-Racist Multicultural Education Network of Ontario (AMENO)\, Blacks and Jews in Dialogue\,  the Women’s Interfaith Dialogue (WIN)\, the Canadian Association of Jews and Muslims (CAJM)\, and the Arab Jewish Leadership Dialogue Group. She chaired the Hate Crimes Community Working Group for the Attorney General and the Minister of Community Safety and Corrections\, and was Senior Policy Advisory to then Minister of Education\, Hon. Kathleen Wynne\, for the development and delivery of Ontario’s Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy. Dr. Mock has published widely and has received many awards and honours for her work\, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal “for service to her peers\, community and country.”

SUMMARY:Social Justice on Trial discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work Chair in Health and Mental Health and\nthe Department of Social Justice Education at OISE invite you to a lunchtime discussion. \nSocial Justice on Trial?? ‘Social Justice Warriors’ and Academia In the News\nFebruary 13\, 2017\n246 Bloor Street West\, Room 720\n12:15-1:15\nCoffee\, tea and cookies will be available. See you there! \nIn recent months Toronto has received national media attention because of university-based uprisings over social justice. On one hand\, we have had an individual challenging ‘social justice warriors’ who want him to use preferred gender pronouns  lauded as a champion of intellectual freedom and common sense. Within weeks\, another academic is maligned for leaving a room during a gathering of activists and he is presented as the victim of overzealous\, misguided ‘social justice warriors’. And these are just two of the many stories that can be told where social justice is being put on trial in the media. \nWhat is a social justice warrior? What are the effects of news media that presents social justice in this way? And what does it mean for people in academic spaces that are committed to social justice? \nWe invite students from Social Work and Social Justice Education to meet\, eat and talk about these important issues. Representatives from both faculties will be there to share their own perspectives and how they see these issues as relevant to their respective disciplines.

SUMMARY:Professor Sonia Kang Talk
DESCRIPTION:Going beyond diversity statements: Resume whitening and responding to labour market discrimination\nTuesday\, March 21\, 2017\n 5:00-6:30 pm\n Room 320\, Student Lounge\n Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work\n 246 Bloor Street West \nDespite the proliferation of interest in increasing diversity\, discrimination continues to be a major problem in the labor market. This workshop will explore ways in which employers and job seekers are reacting to this discrimination\, and offer suggestions for moving diversity statements beyond words into actions. \nDr. Kang will share the results of a novel program of research which investigated the interplay between two practices. First\, a practice adopted by many organizations: explicitly advertising their dedication to diversity\, or identifying themselves as “pro-diversity”\, “equal opportunity”\, or “diversity-friendly” employers. Second\, a practice adopted by some minority job seekers: “resume whitening” — concealing or downplaying racial cues on a job application to increase the chance of getting a callback for an interview. \nThis workshop will explore these two themes and provide attendees with an opportunity to formulate\, adapt\, and challenge their perspectives on pro-diversity statements and resume whitening. We will conclude with a discussion of new directions and possible solutions. \n  \nDr. Sonia Kang is an assistant professor of organizational behavior and human resource management at the Institute for Management and Innovation at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Sonia is cross-appointed to the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

SUMMARY:PhD Colloquium: Cyberbullying and Young People
DESCRIPTION:Cyberbullying and Young People: Behaviours\, Experiences and Resolutions\nWednesday\, May 24th\n12:00-1:30pm\nRoom 222 \nRSVP: https://doodle.com/poll/cfct7epfeg3ikpyd\nLight refreshments will be served. Please RSVP by Tuesday\, May 23 \nCyberbullying has become a key issue for parents\, teachers and policy-makers because of the potential negative impact on the physical and mental health of young people. However\, young people’s voice is largely absent from the current discourse\, particularly in the Irish context. Progress in tackling cyberbullying has been hindered by a lack of consensus about the concept and its definition. Research related to the design\, implementation and evaluation of cyberbullying interventions is scarce. \nThe CY:BER Study (Cyberbullying in Young People: Behaviours\, Experiences\, Resolutions)\, framed by the steps of the Behaviour Change Wheel (Michie et al. 2014)\, aims to work with young people to better understand cyberbullying from their perspective. This will allow the development of an intervention grounded in their wants\, interests and needs. This presentation will outline the stages of the study and discuss progress to date. \n  \nRebecca Dennehy is a Health Research Board (HRB) funded SPHeRE (Structured Population and Health Services Research Education) PhD Scholar based in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College Cork (UCC).
