SUMMARY:Sikh Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:Sikh Heritage Month\, launched nationwide in 2019\, encourages celebration and recognition of the contributions that Sikh communities have made—and continue to make—to all aspects of Canadian society. It also encourages dialogue about productive strategies to foster inclusion and belonging for the Sikh community in Canada. \nThe month of April holds great significance to Sikhs globally. It is a time when Sikhs celebrate the birth of the Khalsa. “Khalsa\,” founded in 1699\, refers to a community that considers Sikhism as its faith and a group of initiated Sikhs. It emerged during the spring harvest festival of Vaisaikhi\, a festival also recognized by additional communities and faiths. \nOntario has formally recognized Sikh Heritage Month since 2013\, celebrating the historical and contemporary contributions of Sikh communities across the province. \nFind related links\, training sessions and more on U of T’s website.

DESCRIPTION:Pronounced “rid-van”  \nThe Festival of Ridván meaning “the King of Festivals” runs for 12 days to commemorate the 12 days Baha’u’llah spent in the garden of Ridván outside Baghdad. SUMMARY:Practice Consultation for Black-Identifying Social Work Students
DESCRIPTION:This is only open to current FIFSW students. Please note that this is the final session for the academic year.  \nJoined by Shawnette Thompson\, the purpose of the practice consultation sessions is to provide Black-identifying social work students with an opportunity to receive advice\, mentorship\, and general support from a Black clinical social worker around how to navigate issues that may arise in their own practice while on practicum and professionally. This space has been created as a braver space for Black-identifying students to share and explore their experiences. \nShawnette Thompson (she/her) brings to the role of Social Work Practice Consultant for the Black Social Work Student’s Association over 15 years of rich experience in social work. This experience spans across private practice\, community programs\, mental health clinics\, universities\, group homes\, and adolescent treatment facilities. Her extensive career has included roles as a child and youth worker\, an individual and family therapist\, a manager of community programs\, and most recently\, the Supervisor of Clinical Affairs at U of T’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work’s Talk It Out Clinic. Shawnette also continues to actively maintain a private practice\, providing therapy to couples\, individuals\, and families\, in addition to providing clinical consultation to social workers in the field. \nAs a Black cisgender female of Caribbean descent\, Shawnette is deeply invested in the mentorship of future social work professionals\, with a focus on dismantling Anti-Black racism and fostering culturally responsive practices. Her appointment as the Social Work Practice Consultant for the Black Social Work Students’ Association at FIFSW is a testament to her dedication and collaborative spirit. \nIn this role\, Shawnette is committed to creating a nurturing environment that not only respects the shared identities of Black students but also promotes the personal and professional\, development of each individual. \nRegister for the Practice Consultation for Black-Identifying Social Work Students!
