DESCRIPTION:Launched in 2010\, Tamil Heritage Month\, was established to celebrate the history of Canada’s Tamil community and its contribution to the social\, cultural\, political and economic strength of Canada. Visit the Tamil Heritage Month website to learn more and view upcoming events.  \nRead about the inaugural Tamil Heritage Month celebrated at U of T in 2019. \nGovernment of Ontario proclamation \nThe Province of Ontario proclaimed January Tamil Heritage Month in 2014.   \nProclamation on the provincial government’s website:  \nTamils began migrating to Ontario as early as the 1940s.  Since that time\, Tamil Canadians have overcome tremendous obstacles and have made significant contributions to the growth and prosperity of Ontario.  \nJanuary is an important month for Tamil Canadians.  The Tamil Harvest Festival\, Thai Pongal\, as well as other Tamil artistic and cultural events\, take place in January. \nBy proclaiming the month of January as Tamil Heritage Month\, the Province of Ontario recognizes the valuable contributions that Tamil Canadians have made to Ontario’s social\, economic\, political and cultural fabric.  Tamil Heritage Month is an opportunity to remember\, celebrate and educate future generations about the inspirational role that Tamil Canadians have played and continue to play in communities across Ontario.  \nNew FIFSW student group \nWorking with FIFSW’s Graduate Student Association (GSA)\, members of FIFSW’s student community are creating a new student affinity group: the Tamil Social Work Student Association (TSWSA).    \nTSWSA aims to function as a community for Tamil social work students to discuss\, support & learn from each other. The group recently put out a call for other Tamil-identifying students who would like to join the collective. SUMMARY:EDI Speaker Series with Andrea Watters Westbrook. Toronto Community Crisis Service: Alternatives for calling the police for mental health crisis situations
DESCRIPTION:Andrea W. Westbrook (she/her) is a PhD Student at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto. She received her Master of Social Work degree\, with a specialization in health and mental health\, from the University of Toronto and her Bachelor of Social Work degree from Toronto Metropolitan University. She also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from OCAD University\, where she explored the integration of her social justice and arts-based practices. Her PhD research is focused on non-policing approaches for community-based mental health crisis interventions.   \n\n\nOutside of her academic work\, Andrea is currently the manager of the Toronto Community Crisis Service (TCCS) team in the downtown central and downtown east neighbourhoods of Toronto. Andrea has been a registered social worker for over 10 years\, predominantly in the downtown east of Toronto\, working within the HIV sector\, in community mental health\, and with people who are street-involved. Throughout her work\, she has seen the importance of delivering a diverse range of support needs and styles\, and she loves discussing how we can be creative within our approaches to this work. She feels privileged to be invited into the communities she gets to work in and to have personal stories of strength and resiliency shared with her. DESCRIPTION:This event is for FIFSW students only.\nRegister Here.\nAbout our featured speaker\nDr. Andrew Pinto is the founder and director of the Upstream Lab (upstreamlab.org)\, a research team focused on tackling social determinants\, population health management\, and using data science to enable proactive care. He holds the CIHR Applied Public Health Chair in Upstream Prevention. He is a Public Health and Preventive Medicine specialist and family physician at St. Michael’s Hospital in downtown Toronto\, and an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. He is the Associate Director for Clinical Research at the University of Toronto Practice-Based Research Network\, the lead for clinical research of Ontario’s POPLAR network\, and founded the Canadian Primary Care Trials Network. He serves on the Institute Advisory Board of CIHR’s Institute for Population and Public Health\, is an adjunct scientist at the Institute for Work and Health\, and an honorary senior lecturer at St. Andrews University in Scotland. \nAbout The Health Equity Grand Rounds\nThe Health Equity Grand Rounds focuses on equity issues related to health and mental health practice. It involves talks by experts focused on key themes in the field. There will be 5 Grand Rounds scheduled in the 2023-2024 academic year.
