SUMMARY:Equity & Power in Global Health Research\, with Miriam Shuchman\, M.D.
DESCRIPTION:FIFSW Lunch & Learn\nLocation: Room 548\, FIFSW\nScholars from sub-Saharan Africa don’t always get the credit they deserve when they collaborate on global health research. These collaborations are more likely to benefit academics from  Canada and other high-income countries who gain in terms of more prominent authorship positions and greater opportunities to publish or present than their partners in low-and-middle-income countries. This inequity gap is documented in multiple bibliometric analyses and persists despite existing guidelines for good collaborative practice\, but it’s begun to change. Granting agencies are starting to require low-and-middle income country co-investigators for global health research\, and journal editors are now questioning or rejecting  global health papers that lack local co-authors. There are also calls to overhaul university promotions practices that incentivize the inequities. Dr. Miriam Shuchman has published on this issue in the Lancet\, Nature Medicine and BMJ Global Health and she’ll discuss how equity is becoming a central issue in global health research. \nMiriam Shuchman is a physician and a journalist\, a former national correspondent for the New England Journal of Medicine who now writes features on biomedical research and global health for the Canadian Medical Association Journal\, the Lancet and other outlets. Miriam is also an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Toronto where her work includes teaching psychiatry residents at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. \n> click here to visit the FIFSW events calendar
