SUMMARY:Working with Suicidal Youth - A talk by Dr. Jonathan Singer
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 11\, 2018\n9:00-11:00 am\nOISE\, 252 Bloor St. West\nRoom 2-212 \nHow can we best serve kids in a suicidal crisis? Research has shown that connection to families and schools\nare two of the most important protective factors to keeping kids alive. In this talk\, Dr. Singer will share\ninsights from a decade’s worth of research on families with a suicidal youth\, crisis services\, help-seeking\, and\ncurrent and future social workers. \nDr. Jonathan Singer is Associate Professor of Social Work at Loyola University Chicago and founder and host\nof the award winning Social Work Podcast. For the past 21 years\, Dr. Singer has been a community mental\nhealth clinician\, educator and researcher\, much of that time providing crisis services to suicidal youth in\nschools. His clinical and research interests focus on interventions for suicidal and cyberbullied youth; service\naccess and service utilization; and use of technology in education and clinical practice. \nHe is the author of over 60 publications\, including the 2015 Routledge text\, Suicide in Schools: A\nPractitioner’s Guide to Multi-level Prevention\, Assessment\, Intervention\, and Postvention. His research has\nbeen featured in national and international media outlets like NPR\, Fox\, Time Magazine\, and The Guardian.\nDr. Singer is a founding member of #SPSM\, an online suicide prevention social media community. He serves\non the boards of the American Association of Suicidology\, and the international organization Human Services\nInformation Technology Association. He is the chair of the Children\, Adolescent\, and Young Adult Committee\nfor the National Association of Social Worker\, and the Council on Publications for the Council on Social Work\nEducation. \nHe lives in Evanston\, IL with his wife and three children and can be found on Twitter as @socworkpodcast. \nThere is no registration fee.
