SUMMARY:The 'Men' in Mental Health?
DESCRIPTION:Implications of the Gender Epidemic in Social Work Research and Practice\nBlack Coalition for AIDS Prevention\n20 Victoria St. 4th Floor\, Board Room\nFriday\, Nov. 10th\n10:00-12:00pm \n  \nDaphne C. Watkins\, PhD is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan\, with faculty appointments in the School of Social Work and the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. Her research cultivates a deeper understanding of the influence of gender role socialization on health status over the adult life course for marginalized men. Dr. Watkins’ research focuses on understanding the social determinants of health that explain within group differences among black men; developing evidence-based strategies to improve the mental health conditions of black men; and increasing knowledge about the intersection of age\, culture\, and gender. Dr. Watkins is an experienced mixed methods researcher who uses qualitative and quantitative data to increase knowledge about how intersecting social determinants and gender dynamics place black men at high risk for poor health. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a Doctorate in Health Education from Texas A&M University. She has received federal and foundation support for her research\, and has produced over 50 peer-reviewed publications\, 17 book chapters and volume sections\, one mixed methods book (Oxford University Press\, 2015) and another book currently under contract (SAGE Publications\, 2018).
