DESCRIPTION:Hatsumi: One Grandmother’s Journey Through the Japanese Canadian Internment\nTuesday\, March 19th\, 2013\n5:30 – 7:00pm\nFIFSW\, 246 Bloor Street West\nRoom 320 \n“A beautifully crafted documentary that never once loses its innate humanity whilst portraying\nthe rampant inhumanity that surrounded these hapless citizens of Canada. Fierce\, loving\, strong\, poetic.” – Deepa Mehta\, Academy Award® nominated director of Midnight‘s Children \n  \nA special screening to commemorate International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination including discussion with the film’s director Chris Hope after the film. \nWhen Chris began the film\, many within the Japanese Canadian community continued to keep their personal experiences during the internment years to themselves. The film project ultimately documented two stories; Nancy’s journey through the internment\, and Chris’ own struggle to assist her to get over her reluctance to speak about it. By taking her to the actual locations of her internment\, with cameras rolling\, Chris witnessed Nancy radiating the emotion that had been lacking in the other real-life internment stories Chris had seen. \nLight refreshments will be available.\nNo RSVP required.
