Social Justice on Trial?? ‘Social Justice Warriors’ and Academia In the News

February 13, 2017
246 Bloor Street West, Room 720
12:15-1:15
Coffee, tea and cookies will be available. See you there!

In recent months Toronto has received national media attention because of university-based uprisings over social justice. On one hand, we have had an individual challenging ‘social justice warriors’ who want him to use preferred gender pronouns  lauded as a champion of intellectual freedom and common sense. Within weeks, another academic is maligned for leaving a room during a gathering of activists and he is presented as the victim of overzealous, misguided ‘social justice warriors’. And these are just two of the many stories that can be told where social justice is being put on trial in the media.

What is a social justice warrior? What are the effects of news media that presents social justice in this way? And what does it mean for people in academic spaces that are committed to social justice?

We invite students from Social Work and Social Justice Education to meet, eat and talk about these important issues. Representatives from both faculties will be there to share their own perspectives and how they see these issues as relevant to their respective disciplines.
