Description of the practicum site and student activities:
Dr. Lisa Bradford & Associates (LBA) is a private practice founded by a clinical and counselling psychologist. We pride ourselves on being interdisciplinary, and currently we have associates who are psychologists/psychological associates, psychotherapists, social workers, counsellors, and student clinicians.
We are a practice that values quality of services for clients, associates, supervisees, students, and administrative staff. We encourage associates and supervisees to interact and get to know one another in order to provide mutual emotional support. Working with clients can be stressful, draining, and emotionally trying. Self-care and support from colleagues are musts! Connecting with other team members also creates a fertile learning environment and promotes the rich exchange of ideas and experiences. We are a warm, welcoming, collegial, collaborative, egalitarian, and supportive environment. Excellent interpersonal communication is highly valued.
We value integrative and multimodal therapy over monotherapy (e.g., using CBT for everyone). It is our hope that new associates and students will get to know our team members and enhance and expand their current therapeutic approaches and clinical repertoires. We also look forward to learning from new associates and supervisees, thereby further diversifying and developing our own treatment methods.
The MSW placement at LBA is for those interested in further developing their psychotherapy skills. This placement is for anyone interested in direct client work. MSW students will be provided with referrals from the clinic director and work with their supervisors to confirm the referral is appropriate for a student. MSW students will be expected to see 5-10 clients per week, attend weekly individual supervisions, weekly group supervisions, and attend monthly supervisions focused on trauma-informed practices.
MSW students will work with their supervisors to identify modalities of interests, short-term and long-term placement goals, and be provided with different reading materials throughout the placement.
MSW students will offer potential clients free consultations, complete an intake session with clients, work with their supervisors to develop treatment plans, and provide ongoing psychotherapy support to a caseload of clients.
Students have opportunities to meet with other associates and students at LBA through weekly group supervisions & monthly trauma group consultations. Google Video is used to connect with students. Students will have access to a designated and private LBA email address. Students are often encouraged to connect with other associates through LBA. This can be done by attending weekly group supervisions, requesting to meet with other associates for connection and coffee chats, and attending any in-person gatherings that may occur during the student placement. Students will be provided with appropriate resources by their supervisor. Students are also encouraged to explore their own areas of interest by looking into trainings & workshops they can attend.
How will you screen clients to ensure they are appropriate for your student?
All referrals complete a questionnaire highlighting their counselling goals, history of suicidality, and if they have insurance coverage. Dr. Bradford screens each questionnaire and refers them to an appropriate LBA associate and/or student. The potential client is advised and consents to the referral to a potential student.
Once a student receives a referral, the student offers the potential client a free 20-minute consultation where they meet to assess if it feels like a good fit. During this call, the individual is reminded that the services would be completed by a student and are advised of who the supervisor is.
As a large group practice, we receive many referrals per day.
Students will not have an opportunity to shadow any sessions. Instead, students will be encouraged to partake in role plays during supervisions as well as with other associates. Students will receive their supervisors personal cell number to call in an emergency. This number should not be provided to any client.
