Description of the practicum site and student activities:
The Drug Treatment Court is a unique treatment program, featuring close collaboration between treatment and the criminal justice system. Clients apply voluntarily but have an ongoing accountability to the court throughout the duration of their program, which lasts a minimum of twelve months. Clients of the program have a dependence on opiates, crack/cocaine and/or methamphetamine and are facing criminal charges. Serving a diverse and marginalized population, the program provides group and individual therapy, case management and ongoing assistance with life skills and social determinants of health, including housing assistance. Our program is harm reduction focused and trauma informed. Students will have opportunities to gain skills in group facilitation and case management, with some potential opportunities for individual work.
Preference given to students who can attend placement on Tuesdays to observe weekly court proceedings at 10 Armoury Street.
