Summer Practicum Update for Students | April 17, 2020

To all students undertaking a practicum in summer 2020:

On behalf of the FIFSW Practicum Office,  we want to express our sincere gratitude for your continued flexibility and patience.  As you are aware, there will be no in-person practicums.  All summer 2020 practicums will be take place REMOTELY. The minimum time requirement is 337.5 hours for the summer practicum. If you are undertaking remote activities now, as provided on the FIFSW website, please continue to do so and log the time assigned to each. Provide the log to your summer field instructor.

The official start date of summer practicum is April 27, 2020, however, an earlier or later start date is acceptable.

 GUIDELINES

  1. For all students (YEAR I, YEAR II/ADVANCED STANDING) who are not yet matched with a remote summer practicum:

The PAS is open. Read opportunities and make selections.

Note: new practicum opportunities continue to be received.  Check the PAS regularly.

Submit up to two selections by email to the Practicum Office, practicum.fsw@utoronto.ca.

Submissions received each morning by 9:00 a.m. will be reviewed daily.

As learning will be conducted remotely, the location of the practicum as noted on the PAS (inside Toronto, or outside Toronto) is no longer a barrier.

Some organizations with competitive practicums (posted on FIFSW website) are still accepting student applications.  If there is a specific summer competition practicum to which you wish to apply (even if  the closing date has passed) please contact Sun (sun.ooi@utoronto.ca) to express your interest.  Sun will follow up with the organization to ensure your application can still be reviewed.  If you apply for a competitive practicum, you may also submit selections from the PAS.

If you are aware of a social worker in your local community or in the GTA who is able to provide a summer practicum, please contact the Practicum Office (practicum.fsw@utoronto.ca). Provide the social worker’s name, title, organization and any contact information to the Practicum Office. The Practicum Office will to evaluate whether the practicum meets the CASWE accreditation standards.

Note: YEAR II/Advanced Standing students: When reviewing the PAS, you may consider all practicums – not only those identified in your field of study. We trust that in working with your remote field instructor you will plan activities that are related to the theoretical learning you have received in your classes.

  1. For all students currently matched with a summer practicum:

A schedule for submission of the learning contract, midterm and final evaluations will be forwarded shortly.

The name of your Faculty Field Liaison will be identified on your PAS profile.

  1. If you have not yet registered for the summer practicum course, please complete and submit an SGS Add Course Form to the Practicum Office, fsw@utoronto.ca immediately.
