Jennifer Ma is a PhD Candidate at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto and a Research Associate at the School of Social Work at the University of Melbourne. She is currently working on a mixed-methods research project examining domestic violence child protection cases in Australia. Her research interests focus on ethno-racial disproportionality in the child welfare system. She is particularly interested in critically examining the social, structural and systemic factors driving the overrepresentation of First Nations children and families in the child welfare system. She is also interested in Indigenous research and practice as it pertains to child welfare. She was a volunteer at the Children Aid’s Society of Toronto for six years and has worked with families involved with the Child Access Program. She has worked on numerous research studies, including the Canadian Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect and Lost in Translation. She is also interested in community-based participatory action research methods and has worked on projects with youth from Parkdale and Regent Park.
